One Spot Trail Officially Open

The Regional District of Comox-Strathcona's One-Spot Trail is officially open. This new trail is rich in local history which is reflected in the name "One-Spot"; a 1909 wood burning railway locomotive, purchased by the Comox Logging & Railway Company.

The One-Spot Trail is built on the former main line railway grade that ran from Headquarters to Royston. The trail is six kilometers long and begins at Condensory Road near Cessford Road and ends near the Tsolum River. It is mainly a packed gravel surface, with some short sections of trail along dirt roads. Walking, cycling, and horseback riding are all permitted along the length of the trail and interpretive signs describe the history of logging in the area and the present day ecology of the second growth forests.

"This trail system was built by the community for the community," said Barry Minaker, director for Electoral Area "C". Sections of the trail were built by dedicated volunteers from the Comox Valley Land Trust, the Back Country Horsemen of BC, the Dove Creek Community Association, and the Comox Valley Naturalist Society. "This is a great community accomplishment. It could not have been completed without the hard work and dedication of countless volunteers, area residents, and the regional district. This new trail system is an asset to the Dove Creek neighbourhood and will provide many years of outdoor recreational enjoyment", added director Minaker.

The RDC-S was established in 1965 and is a partnership of nine rural electoral areas and eight municipalities providing nearly 100,000 residents with over 140 services ranging from parks to full service sports facilities to regional solid waste systems.
